In 1988, he went to US, on a Cal Tech transfer scholarship to get a bachelors degree at California Institute of Technology.
In 1994, he started working on HoTMaiL (concatenating the upper-case letters spells HTML, the language used to develop HTML.) with Jack Smith, a colleague from Apple Computers, Inc.
June 4, 1996, with an investment of around $300,000 by Draper Fisher, HoTMaiL was launched.
He sold HoTMaiL to Microsoft for $400 million on his birthday, 30th December, 1997.
Future plans include development of Nanocity in India, replicating Silicon Valley.
One of the most successful Indians of Silicon Valley, Sabeer Bhatia, is one of the co-founders of Hotmail. Named by TIME as one of the “People to Watch” in International Business (2002), Sabeer, falls in the category of richest Indians, thanks to Hotmail, which helped him to take his fortune to the excellence akin to cosmic levels.

Sabeer Bhatia, was the only applicant in 1988 who cleared one of the toughest scholarship tests of the California Institute of Technology with the passing score of 62. In 1988, Sabeer, went to United States and graduated in Science with honours and earned a masters degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. In 1992, he dropped out of his PhD degree course and joined Apple Computers Inc. and then he worked for Firepower Systems Inc.

Sabeer was fascinated by how one can do so many wonderful things like receiving mails etc. The fascination materialised into reality in 1994 when he listened to his instinct and came up with an idea to work on Internet related activities. He teamed up with Jack Smith, a colleague from Apple Computer, Inc. and came up with an idea of a web-based e-mail system and thus decided to develop Hotmail. Draper Fisher Ventures financed the project with a huge sum of $300,000. On July 4, 1996, the services were launched and in a span of less than six months, it drew attention of more than 1 million Internet users. In no time it reached to the top positions in the e-world and attracted top notch computer companies like Microsoft towards it. On December 30, 1997, Hotmail was sold to Microsoft for an impressive sum of $400 million.

After Selling his dream project, this dream merchant worked for Microsoft for about an year and then started with his another project, Arzoo Inc., which was another website but abandoned it when dot-com bubble burst into the sphere of information technology. Again in 2006, he relaunched the website as a travel portal. To challenge the monopoly of blogosphere, he also started BlogEverywhere with Shiraz Kanga and Viraf Zack. Recently, in 2007, he released Live Documents. An alternative to Microsoft office, this application allows user to perform almost the same work as they would have done on Microsoft Office and also supports Microsoft plug-ins. Furthermore, it is also compatible with all the standard office documents.
He also supported the idea of accessing the Internet through the cable television in Indian homes. In January 2008, Sabeer announced his latest project SabSeBolo.com (Let's talk to everyone), a teleconferencing system.

His new vision is to develop a Nanocity in India. Nanocity will be his one of the biggest projects in, which the main emphasis will be given to ensuring that Nanocity becomes capable enough of replicating the standards and efficiency of the Silicon Valley. It will nourish thousands of talented mind all over the world and will give a better platform and opportunity to being able to innovate and, therefore, create new things.
